Eighty years have passed since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, but the deep wound it left in our collective consciousness is still raw.
This sombre anniversary is for all the victims. More than 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau, including nearly one million Jews. In the face of evil and intolerance, they offered innocence and dignity. Their sacrifice will live on forever. We repeat their names. To them, we pledge: we will not forget you.
The 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau is for all the survivors. They came back to share their story. To tell the truth. To try to heal. And to warn us. Few are still with us today, and with them the living memory of the Holocaust. We celebrate their lives, honour their suffering, and amplify their voice.
This commemoration is for the younger generations. The liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau was not the end of antisemitism and hatred. It was the beginning of a never-ending journey towards a more just humanity. To the young people of Europe and the world, we say: learn about the Holocaust. Remember its lessons. Carry the torch.
Our journey towards a more just humanity is a constant work in progress. We must root our efforts in human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
Together, we bear witness. Never forget. Never again.
