Better Access For Harrison Dam Hunters

NT Government

The CLP Government is committed to creating more hunting opportunities for recreational hunters by expanding the Harrison Dam Conservation Area (Reserve).

From Monday 21 October 2024, recreational hunters will still be able to access the Reserve during peak hunting times, however access will be restricted between the hours of 9.00am and 4.00pm to allow for infrastructure upgrades to improve access to the southern part of the Reserve.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Gerard Maley, said "Recreational hunting is an important part of the Territory lifestyle, and the CLP Government wants to make it even better by providing greater access to hunting opportunities."

The Reserve, located on the Arnhem Highway about 65 kilometres from Darwin CBD, attracts around 9,000 visitors annually, mainly during the waterfowl hunting season from late September to early January.

While the Reserve covers 3,284 hectares of land, recreational hunters are currently not able to access the whole Reserve, with no vehicle access to parts of the southern section due to waterlogged swamps, lagoons and floodplain channels.

To address this and provide more hunting opportunities for recreational hunters the CLP Government is investing in improving access to the southern part of the Reserve.

Minister Maley said this improved access will not only expand the accessible area for hunting activities it will also improve the ability to undertake weed and feral animal control activities on a greater scale.

"Improving access to the southern part of Harrison Dam Conservation Reserve will enable hunters to use more of the Reserve. This is only the first step to make hunting even better in the NT and I look forward to announcing more projects and programs for recreational hunters in the near future," he said.
