Better Protections For King Island

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Have your say on the draft referral guidelines for clearing or modification of native vegetation on King Island.

The draft guide supports proponents, project managers and consultants to determine whether clearing or modification of native vegetation on Tasmania's King Island need referral under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

Under the EPBC Act, an action that will have a significant impact on a matter of national environmental significance requires approval from the Minister for the Environment.

King Island is home to a range of native plants and animals, some endemic to the Island. It also hosts the 3 Australian birds most at risk of extinction, the:

  • King Island brown thornbill
  • Orange-bellied parrot
  • King Island scrubtit.

We are seeking feedback and insights from the community on the draft guidelines, to ensure they are fit for purpose and to understand the real-world implications of the guidelines for the King Island community.

The consultation is open until 24 February 2025.
