"I wish Bill Shorten well on the next stage of his career following the announcement of his retirement from federal parliament," Innes Willox, the Chief Executive of the national employer association Ai Group said today.
"Mr Shorten has been a major contributor to public policy and debate for a long time, as a union official, minister and Opposition Leader.
"Ai Group has worked closely with Mr Shorten across all those areas to improve policy outcomes where possible for Australian businesses and the broader community.
"While there has naturally not been agreement on all issues over the years, our dialogue has always been open, constructive and conducted in good faith.
"Mr Shorten has consistently displayed an openness and willingness to work with the Australian business community. This includes working closely with the Australian Industry Group around the establishment of AustralianSuper in the early 2000s.
"Mr Shorten's commitment to the establishment of the National Disability Insurance Scheme is particularly noteworthy and will undoubtedly be seen as his lasting contribution to the Australian community.
"Mr Shorten has been a highly significant contributor to Australian public life in recent years. We thank him for his contribution. Undoubtedly, he will continue to contribute to public debate in the years ahead," Mr Willox said.
