Western Local Land Services will be working with a local Aboriginal employment organisation to remove African Boxthorn from two Travelling Stock Reserves (TSRs) located near Brewarrina and Goodooga.
The work, which will be carried out by the Regional Enterprise Development Institute (REDI.E), will improve the condition and reduce threats to the Coolibah-Black Box Endangered Ecological Community that is present at both TSRs, benefitting local landholders and the environment.
Land Services Officer Andrea Cashmere is looking forward to the on-ground work commencing.
"The abundance of Aboriginal cultural heritage that remains untouched along the Tarrion creek is amazing. Clearing the area of African Boxthorn will not only protect the area into the future but allow good access for community to visit and appreciate so much culture so close to town," Ms Cashmere said.
"Weeds such as African Boxthorn are a significant issue affecting the condition of native vegetation communities in the Western region, with invasive species recognised as the second greatest cause of biodiversity decline after habitat loss.
"This work will not only improve the condition of the TSRs but give them greater capacity to withstand and recover from factors such as drought."
