A fire has impacted around 2000 tyres and a number of round hay bales in silage wrap at a Tatura property this afternoon, 24 October.
Firefighters from Mooroopna, Tatura, Kyabram and Merrigum were called to the grass fire on Merrigum-Ardmona Road at 3.25pm, which was creating a significant amount of black smoke.
D22 Commander Peter Bell said the fire has been contained to around six to seven acres.
"Crews are now working on it to make it safe because the tyres may burn and smoulder for a while tonight," Mr Bell said.
"There was a lot of smoke up in the air, but it is dispersing at this stage, so it's not going into the Tatura township.
"Firefighters will be there for a couple of hours blacking out tonight."
The Environment Protection Authority was advised of the incident and a rehab unit was on scene for the welfare of CFA personnel.
The fire was brought under control by crews and listed as safe at 5.39pm.
"This is a timely reminder that fire restrictions will be in place across District 22 on Monday, 28 October," Commander Bell said.
"People must be vigilant with what they're burning off and have adequate suppression systems available and remember to register their burn off."
