Blacktown Celebrates Year of Snake with Festivities

Lunar New Year dragon

Fireworks, lion dancing and drumming were all part of the fun as thousands of people enjoyed Blacktown City Council's Lunar New Year celebrations at Nurragingy Reserve, Doonside.

Performers from a variety of cultures provided cultural workshops and entertained crowds in the Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens on 7 February.

Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting wished everyone a prosperous year ahead.

"The snake symbolises wisdom and transformation in Asian culture, and we are all wiser for embracing cultural events like this and learning about our neighbours," he said.

"An increasing part of our community hails from Asia, so it's only fitting Council provides opportunities for them to celebrate their identity and heritage."

Census figures show a considerable increase in Blacktown City residents who were born in Asian countries in recent years.

Children and adults enjoyed the occasion with free craft activities such as origami, dough sculptures, fan decorating and face painting.
