Bleed For Life: Local Government Blood Drive

Council staff recently joined the Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout in visiting the Lifeblood Donor Centre, rolling up their collective sleeve to help save lives through donating blood.

Wagga Wagga City Council's contribution was part of the three-month Local Government Blood Drive, which kicked off on 1 July, which is hoping to see more than 100 donations made in the Riverina before 30 September.

Last year donors from Riverina councils donated blood and plasma 75 times, saving up to 225 lives.

Lifeblood spokesperson Mitch Bryce said local government organisations always come together to show they are the heart of our community.

"We know the Wagga Wagga City Council staff are incredibly generous donors and we hope they will save even more lives this year," Mr Bryce said.

"Every drop counts and all it takes is an hour of time.

"With one in three people needing blood in their lifetime, you never know when it might be a family member, a neighbour or someone from your community who needs it."

Mr Bryce said new blood donors were always needed, especially during winter.

"At this time of year many of our regular donors are sick with colds and flu, but the need for blood doesn't take a sickie, so we need new donors to step up and take their place."
