Department of State

As stated by Spokesperson Matthew Miller:

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo yesterday to thank him and his administration for working with us to welcome 135 Nicaraguan political prisoners and for continuing to demonstrate democratic leadership in the region. Secretary Blinken commended Guatemala for its continued commitment to supporting people in need.

The Secretary reaffirmed that the United States continues to prioritize support for the Nicaraguan people's demands for a peaceful return to democracy and a Nicaragua where all can exercise their human rights and fundamental freedoms, without fear of repression or political reprisal.
