Blinken Speaks With Japan's Foreign Minister Iwaya

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke today with new Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi to congratulate him on his appointment. The Secretary and Foreign Minister affirmed the importance of the U.S.-Japan Alliance as the cornerstone of security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, and a truly global partnership. They noted Japan's contributions to the global and regional security and economic order, including as a member of the G7 and the Quad. They also discussed the importance of continuing to advance U.S.-Japan-ROK trilateral cooperation and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific. The Secretary thanked Japan for its ongoing partnership on Ukraine and noted his enduring support for resolving the DPRK abduction issue.
