The body of a man believed to be that of a missing swimmer has been located following a wide-scale search in the state's north yesterday.
About 1.15pm (Thursday 22 September 2022), emergency services were called after reports a swimmer was having difficulty in the water near Barneys Point Bridge at Chinderah.
Officers attached to Tweed-Byron Police District and Marine Area Command launched a wide-scale search for the swimmer, with assistance from Surf Life Saving Australia, NSW Ambulance, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Queensland Marine Area Command and volunteers from Marine Rescue NSW.
Following ongoing search efforts, a man's body was located in waters nearby about 7pm.
While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be the missing swimmer – a man aged in his 20s.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
