Community members are invited to celebrate Positive Ageing Month across the Surf Coast Shire, with bookings now open for a diverse range of events and activities.
Positive Ageing Month is Surf Coast Shire Council's annual celebration of people aged 55 and over. Community groups are on board, organising a range of activities for people to enjoy.
Dance, film, trivia, history sharing, information sessions, open days, recreational outings, and intergenerational events bringing together older and younger people – October is overflowing with opportunities for participation, connection, and plenty of fun.
Councillor Gary Allen is proud that this year's calendar features a record number of free or low-cost events and activities spread across the shire, with majority being community-run.
"While the Council will host several events, it's fantastic that we're mostly playing a supporting role as community groups and organisations take the reins," he said.
"Positive Ageing Month aligns with the Council's work towards an age-friendly community, where older people are valued, respected and actively supported to participate in their community.
"I encourage interested people to find an event or two, book their spot, and use it as an opportunity to celebrate being a valuable citizen who contributes positively to our community."
Numerous activities and events will link in with various themes throughout October including International Probus Day, Mental Health Week, Get Online Week, and National Carers Week.
Positive Ageing Month is part of the Victorian Seniors Festival. This year's theme is: Explore. Engage. Evolve.
The Victorian Government will provide Victorian Seniors Card holders free travel on public transport between 6 and 13 October, so that they can attend regional and metropolitan events.
