Sunraysia and Mallee businesses are being encouraged to protect their staff ahead of the upcoming flu season by utilising Mildura Rural City Council's workplace immunisation service.

Bookings are now open for workplace influenza vaccinations during May. This service is available to all businesses operating within the Mildura Rural City Council area.

Council's qualified nurse vaccinators are available to visit worksites and businesses with 10 or more employees. Workplaces with under 10 employees can arrange a time for their staff to receive their flu shot at Council's Deakin Avenue Service Centre in Mildura.

Councillor Ian Arney urged local businesses to make the most of this public health service and offer flu vaccines to their staff.

"Influenza can seriously affect your workplace and your personal life. On average, people take up to two weeks to recover from influenza," Cr Arney said.

"People with the flu can be contagious before any symptoms show, so it is easy to spread influenza. It makes sense to protect your staff and the people they come in to contact with."

Influenza is not the same as a cold. The Victorian Department of Health estimates that 3,500 Australians die each year from the complications of influenza, including pneumonia.
