Boosting Circularity in Community and Open Spaces

Council is now buying back the compost made from our food and garden kerbside waste to be used locally, thanks to a grant provided by the Victorian Government.

Yarra City Council is dedicated to ensuring that we embed circularity into all our systems and processes. Council introduced its food and garden organics (FOGO) collection service in July 2024. Through this service our processing partner, RepurposeIT, is now turning food and garden organics into a valuable and re-usable product: compost.

Council is now able to buy-back this compost to be used locally, thanks to a generous contribution of $49,900 provided by the Victorian Government through their Circular Economy Organics Council Fund.

This compost will be used locally to benefit the plant life in our open spaces and to grow fruits and vegetables for the participants of our community growing spaces and gardens.

This is a tangible example of how correctly sorting kerbside waste can have immediate positive impacts to our City. By minimising contamination we are ensuring we are reducing our impact to climate and ensuring the end product can be used to benefit our community. Council is proud to demonstrate the ways that circularity can be embedded in what we do locally.

We're holding a range of events for you to learn more about this program. Come and chat to us about the process of turning your FOGO material into compost. Have a touch and feel of the product and see for yourself why it is so important to keep your FOGO material free of contamination.
