Boy nearly drowns in pool, NSW

Police are issuing a timely water safety reminder after a boy nearly drowned at Goolgowi, 50km northwest of Griffith yesterday, NSW Police say.

Just before 5.30pm yesterday, police and emergency services were called to the Goolgowi Public Swimming Pool following reports a four-year-old boy was found at the bottom of the pool.

A lifeguard at the pool performed CPR on the boy before local SES and NSW Ambulance Paramedics arrived and stabilised the child before taking him to Griffith Base Hospital in a stable condition.

The child is expected to make a full recovery.

Griffith Local Area Command Duty Officer, Inspector Nicholas Seddon said "This incident could have turned out very differently.

"Thanks to the quick actions and first-aid training of the lifeguard, there wasn’t another tragic drowning to add to the 17 deaths across the state over this holiday period".

"Adult supervision of children and learning first-aid are two of the best things to help avoid these tragedies" said Insp Seddon.
