Breast cancer support comes to Tasmania as BCNA welcomes back face-to-face information forums
This month Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) will hit the road, and the skies, to bring breast cancer support to Tasmania.
On 22 June, BCNA's 'Living well with breast cancer' Information Forum will be held in Launceston to give local people affected by breast cancer an opportunity to hear from experts about current and emerging treatments, managing the emotional impacts and local support available.
Kirsten Pilatti, BCNA CEO, says the Living Well Information Forums are designed to provide information and support to everyone affected by breast cancer.
'Whether someone has been diagnosed with DCIS, early breast cancer or metastatic breast cancer our Information Forums provide attendees with the evidence-based information they need to help make informed decisions throughout their breast cancer experience. It's also a great way to connect with other people in the community who have been diagnosed and to share stories and advice.'
The Launceston forum will feature two concurrent information sessions throughout the day – one for people with early breast cancer and one for people living with metastatic breast cancer.
The early breast cancer session will discuss new and emerging treatments, how to manage side effects of treatment and lymphoedema. The metastatic breast cancer session will focus on living life with metastatic breast cancer, including dealing with the emotional issues and fear of progression, and supportive care options to enhance quality of life.
Both sessions will ensure people in and around Launceston know about the local support available and are informed to make healthy lifestyle choices to promote wellness, manage treatment related side effects and enhance long-term health outcomes.
'After a long wait, we are excited to be back on the road to bring our face-to-face Information Forums to regional and rural areas around Australia. We want to give everyone, no matter where they live, the information and support they need to navigate their treatment and care,' says Ms Pilatti.
Guest speakers include medical oncologist and supportive care physician Dr Ben Forster, oncology senior social worker Dr Carrie Lethborg and specialist Metastatic Breast Care Nurse Jenny Gilchrist.
