We're calling for your ideas on how Council can support a vibrant and flexible mixed-use precinct in Corrimal.
From now until 14 September, we're asking community members to share what they think about the Wilga Street Block and surrounding area. This is an important block of land bound by Wilga Street, Collins Street, the Princes Highway and Memorial Park.
Council is not proposing any changes to planning controls outside the area referred to as the Wilga Street Block.
We're asking for community feedback now because we're currently investigating Council's planning controls in this area.
We want to know what you think it should look like into the future, what ideas do you have that could work in this space, and what features or priorities are most important to you?
"Planning controls are one way that Council can proactively encourage a vibrant and flexible mixed-use precinct that supports the needs of our community," Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.
"The aim of this investigation is to find out what changes and innovative approaches could breathe new life into the Wilga Street Block in Corrimal.
"We have a lot of good information about what might work through testing a mix of uses, building types, building sizes, and transport and pedestrian connections. But now we want to check in with the residents and visitors to the area who have firsthand knowledge of the area to understand what they imagine the Wilga Street Block could look like in the future.
Wollongong City Council recognises that the Corrimal Town Centre is an important place. The Wilga Street Block project aims to strengthen this and add value to the community through its connections to the existing Town Centre through its walkability, location and proximity to the Corrimal Memorial Park, Sports Fields and Tennis Courts.
"The Wilga Street project has the potential to deliver a high-quality outcome that supports the changing needs of our community and adds value to the Town Centre," Cr Bradbery said.
"To get this right we need the support of our community. I encourage all Corrimal residents to take a look at the information provided and share your thoughts on this project now while we're in the idea generation stage"
