The Bruce Highway is a major corridor connecting Brisbane to the regional centres of Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, and is critical to the movement of people and freight across the state of Queensland.
Since 2013, the Australian and Queensland Governments have invested significantly to improve safety, reduce congestion and boost flood resilience along the Bruce Highway. This investment has resulted in a significant improvements in safety and reduced the rate of fatal and serious crashes.
However, further investment is required. This new safety package will fast-track critical projects along the whole corridor, with an initial focus on priority sections north of Gympie.
The upgrades may include installing safety barriers, wide centre lines and audio tactile line marking; constructing wider shoulders; increasing run off areas, overtaking lanes and rest areas; and improving intersections, signage, and sight lines. The upgrades will also include road resealing and improvements to make road surfaces more resilient to damage from severe weather.
Projects funded under the package will be decided in consultation with the Queensland Government and the Bruce Highway Advisory Council with works commencing in 2025.
