Residents of Mittagong will be amongst the first of the Shire's homeowners to take advantage of Wingecarribee Shire Council's new bulky waste collection service starting in January 2022.
From 31 January through until 11 February residents of Mittagong, Balaclava, Renwick and Welby will be able to leave their bulky waste on their kerbside for Council collection.
The bulk waste collection service will then move to the northern villages before continuing to Bowral and the Shire's outlying villages before finishing in Moss Vale in April 2022.
The introduction of the initial annual bulk waste collection service follows a recommendation by Council's Interim Administrator which sees the service cover 19,500 eligible properties across the Shire. All existing property owners who currently have a residential Council garbage collection service will be able to take advantage of the new service.
Costs for the new pick-up will be absorbed by Council for the first two years of operation.
Collections will be increased to a bi-annual service after July 2024 and an annual levy applied to eligible ratepayers thereafter.
Residents will not be required to pre-book the service and will be notified by letterbox drop a fortnight prior to the commencement of the pick-up in their area.
The bulk waste kerbside collection replaces Council's current bi-annual pre-paid collection service and will be limited to a maximum of 2 cubic metres or not more than 1 metre tall or 2 metres in length. All items left for disposal must be able to be lifted by a maximum of two people.
Accepted items include household furniture, mattresses, metals and whitegoods (excluding refrigerators). Any white goods left for pick-up must have doors removed prior to being left out for disposal.
Items that will not be picked up include asbestos or items contaminated with asbestos, building waste, car tyres, batteries or vehicle engines, chemicals, glass and mirrors and electronic waste. Any materials left behind after collection will be classified as either non-conforming or having exceeded the allowable volume. Residents will be responsible for the proper disposal of these items themselves
Council encourages residents to consider re-using, recycling, repairing or donating their unwanted goods prior to disposing.
