Burn Beach retiree, Sarah Blakebrough, has been blown away by the generosity of the community after raising more than $6000 through her Do It For Cancer fundraising walk to help those with cancer.
Sarah said the initial idea was to raise $1000 through a 4km walk for the retirement village residents, but that all changed when word got out.
"We know so many friends and family who are currently going through cancer or have passed away from cancer that one day at our social club I suggested we do a walk for cancer," Sarah said.
"I thought people would give $5-10 donations, so I set the target for $1000.
"Then all these people in the community heard about it and started asking if they could get involved.
"One of the residents told his work colleagues about the walk and they ended up donating about $2000, which was so incredible.
"Everybody in the community got involved and chipped in - IGA, Bunnings, cafes, Officeworks, and the people in the Burns Beach community."
Sarah said nearly 100 people turned up for the 4km walk on Sunday 26 March along Burns Beach, with many other beach goers donating on the day.
"I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to make this inaugural event such a success," she said.
"It was a lot of work, but we hope to do it again next year as we know it is going towards a very good cause."
Cancer Council WA Engagement Manager, Annie Hicks, praised Sarah for her outstanding fundraising efforts.
"We are so grateful to Sarah and the whole Burns Beach Community," she said.
"It's only through the generosity of the community and fundraisers like Sarah that we are able to do what we do."
