Buzz on Vanderbilt's bees

As we celebrate National Honey Bee Day hear from James Moore, Vanderbilt's landscape architect, about how hundreds of acres of trees, green spaces and gardens across Vanderbilt's campus support thousands of bees. With hives on the roof of the central library, bees are the research focus of Manuel Giannoni-Guzmán, a postdoctoral scholar in biological sciences. Giannoni-Guzmán's research has shown that bees can tell time by temperature and how pesticides affect a bee's brain. He conducts his research in the lab of Doug McMahon, Stevenson Chair of Biological Sciences and Director of the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program.
