Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon, has given a financial boost to three very different local events that support bringing people together.
Mayor Lyon used his discretionary allowance to allocate $500 to Brunswick Valley Landcare's Mother's Day tree planting event which is being held on 16 June after being postponed earlier this month because of rain.
"Brunswick Valley Landcare volunteers do an amazing job helping restore and improve our bush and coastal areas and Council is a very strong supporter of the work they do," Mayor Michael Lyon said.
The other recipients are the Mullumbimby Laneways Festival and the C.A.S.E (community art space and education) Postcard event.
"We just had the Laneways event in Mullum and there was dancing in the street and kids, including mine, running around having the time of their lives – what could be better than that!" Mayor Lyon said.
"It was the second year that Laneways has run and it's a free event for the community so the $500 donation will go towards covering costs.
"I also think it's important to acknowledge the arts so we are sponsoring a $500 environmental prize for C.A.S.E., a not-for-profit group that's dedicated to supporting and creating opportunities for artists, at its Postcard exhibition," he said.
"The cost of living is extraordinary and community groups are doing it very tough so it's a great pleasure to be able to support these worthwhile events in a small, but meaningful way," Mayor Lyon said.
