Heavy rain in early April has resulted in delays to some of Council's infrastructure projects with staff needing to focus on more immediate repair work to more than 13 roads.
In early April, the NSW Government declared the Byron Shire, a natural disaster area.
Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said the declaration was recognition by the NSW and Australian Governments, of the unexpected cost to Council, to repair significantly damaged infrastructure.
"Under the guidelines for natural disaster funding we have a window of three months to do the work, and this means reallocating our crews so we can meet the timeframe," Mr Holloway said.
"I know this is frustrating for some residents and businesses, but the weather is not something we can control, and we need to work with funding bodies," he said.
Projects that will be delayed or impacted include:
- Fern Street Shared Path – now scheduled to begin in June.
- Gravel re-sheeting works.
- General road and stormwater maintenance programs.
- Installation of new lights at Bangalow Sports Fields.
Contractors working on the reconstruction of Federal Drive have also advised Council, that because of the rain over the last month, it is not likely the road will reopen until June.
Almost 400 mm of rain has fallen in the Federal area since the start of April.
