Fiery 19th century dancer, actress, globetrotting adventurer, lover of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and social reformer—the life of Lola Montez is bound for the stage in Camperdown.
Globally awarded cabaret legends Finucane & Smith are bringing their five-star "true-lies" exposé of the wildest showgirl in history and her scandalous tour of Australia!
Artistic director Moira Funicane said Montez toured the Ballarat goldfields in 1855 with "the most libertinish and indelicate performance that could be given on the public stage" ('Sydney Morning Herald', 1855).
"She horsewhipped the editor of the Ballarat Times for a bad review, swung down mine shafts with champagne in hand, and escaped arrest dressed only in her jewels.
"'Lola' is an unforgettably joyous night out — a mix of breathtaking storytelling, sultry divas, and jaw-dropping burlesque, steeped in Australian history.
"Written by Patrick White Playwright Award winner Jackie Smith, it stars triple Best Actress winner Miss Caroline Lee (a direct descendant of Lola herself!), burlesque goddess Maple Rose, operatic darling Piera Dennerstein, and Parisian club kitten Iva Rosebud.
"After every 'Lola' show we offer The Lola Lounge, where community and audience members mingle with the stars of the show, and there is chatting, dancing, a song or three, drinks at the bar and a fabulous 'pop up' performance or three!
Corangamite Shire Council Events and Creative Industries Team Leader Tammy Young said the adults-only production would include some artistic nudity and will be a fun Thursday night out with local businesses on board.
"Local producers Timboon Distillery and Babche Wines will be on site to sell wine and cocktails. Excuse Me Katies will offer grazing boxes for purchase via Humanitix when people buy their tickets."
The Victorian Tour Exotic Lives of Lola Montez is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, Creative Australia, Auspicious Arts Projects and by Finucane & Smith's Unrealists.
