Camden Council has received $481,000 in funding from Transport for NSW under the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.
The NSW Government has an aspirational goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2050. Currently, someone is hospitalised or killed every 50 minutes due to a crash on NSW roads.
The Program will deliver important road infrastructure at high-risk locations such as Macquarie Grove Road, Kirkham in an effort to help save lives.
Mayor of Camden Ashleigh Cagney said, "The funding to prevent road deaths and serious accidents is paramount for Council and drivers also need to look out for motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.
"We greatly appreciate the Transport for NSW funding as it's allocated to road shoulder upgrades that will enhance road safety," Mayor Cagney said.
The following works will be carried out at Macquarie Grove Road Bridge, by May 2025:
• Sealed shoulder ranging from 1 - 2.5 metres for 800 metres
• New curve warning signs; and
• Guideposts with reflectors.
The grant funding was accepted in the Ordinary Council Meeting on 15 October 2024.
According to the 2026 Road Safety Plan that's aligned with the Towards Zero Roads Program, the majority of serious injuries from road crashes happen in metropolitan areas.
The causes of these crashes include speeding, fatigue, drink driving, no seat belts, and drug driving.
The Program will continue to deliver life-saving road safety treatments through the Saving Lives on Country Roads and Safe and Liveable Urban Communities initiatives.
