Fifty-five Campbelltown residents from 23 countries were yesterday awarded their Australian citizenship at Council's first citizenship ceremony of the year on Harmony Day.
Mayor George Greiss presented each resident with their citizenship certificates during the ceremony.
"Receiving Australian citizenship is often one of the proudest moments in the lives of many people so I was honoured to present such a large cohort of people with their citizenship as one of my first civic acts as Mayor," Cr Greiss said.
This year's Harmony Week theme is Everyone Belongs, encouraging a spirit of inclusiveness and acceptance in the community.
"Campbelltown's cultural diversity is one of our strongest assets, fostering a spirit of togetherness despite our differences and encouraging people to learn about other cultures through their neighbours and friends," he said.
Council hosts citizenship ceremonies regularly over the course of the year for local residents who have applied to become Australian citizens through the Department of Home Affairs.
Nations represented at the citizenship ceremony included Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Egypt, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, South Africa, Vietnam.
