Canada Appoints New Judge to Tax Court

The Honourable Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment under the judicial application process established in 2016. This process emphasizes transparency, merit, and the diversity of the Canadian population, and will continue to ensure the appointment of jurists who meet the highest standards of excellence and integrity.

Ryan P. Rabinovitch, Partner at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP in Montréal, is appointed a Judge of the Tax Court of Canada. Justice Rabinovitch replaces Justice J.R. Owen, who resigned effective May 3, 2024.

Biography

Justice Ryan P. Rabinovitch grew up in Montreal. He received a B.C.L. and L.L.B. from McGill University in 2002 and a B.C.L. (Master's Degree) from the University of Oxford in 2003. He clerked with the Honourable Louise Arbour of the Supreme Court of Canada and was called to the Barreau du Québec in 2006.

Justice Rabinovitch speaks English and French fluently. He worked as a tax lawyer with Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP and McCarthy Tétrault LLP before joining Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP in 2017, where he served as co-leader of the Montreal Tax Group.

Justice Rabinovitch was a member of the International Bar Association, the Association de planification fiscale et financière, and was a Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation. He was a regular speaker at various conferences held by these and other organizations.

Justice Rabinovitch and his spouse, Shanna, are proud parents of a son, Ethan, and daughter, Joni. He enjoys hiking, travelling, and cooking.
