Over 160 projects supported to enhance recreational facilities, parks and trails to attract visitors to region
In Eastern Ontario, tourism attractions and destinations like museums, vibrant downtown cores, culinary delights and historic sites play a vital role in the region's economy and cultural identity, promoting the unique heritage and natural beauty of the region. The Government of Canada understands the importance of the tourism sector and is committed to supporting communities as they build towards a strong future from coast to coast to coast.
During Economic Development Week, we are highlighting the important investments that have been made across Ontario to support the tourism industry. Between 2022 and 2023, the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) delivered nearly $140 million through the Tourism Relief Fund (TRF) to help tourism-oriented businesses and organizations across southern Ontario recover from the impacts of the pandemic and safely welcome back visitors.
As part of this investment, more than $17.5 million was delivered to 166 tourism businesses and organizations in eastern Ontario, providing memorable experiences for visitors and positioning the region for success.
For example, Moonlight on the Bay, an Indigenous-led tourism organization, received $100,000 to construct two rental villas, offering guests a panoramic view of the Bay of Quinte, while also allowing them to enjoy the culture and nature of the area.
TRF support also made a difference in the community of Harcourt, where South Algonquin Equestrian Trails received $100,000 to create 17 equine campsites in the Haliburton Highlands. Project funding allowed for the installation of hydro, as well as site preparation with driveways and signage. The project helped to expand campsite offerings for guests along with their horses to enjoy the beautiful scenic trails throughout the southern portion of Algonquin Park.
Also with this Government of Canada support, Ottawa Tourism and Convention Authority Inc. (RTO 10) and Ontario's Highlands Tourism Organization (RTO 11) provided non-repayable contributions of up to $100,000 to tourism businesses and organizations in the region.
For example, RTO11 supported Bancroft Community Transit (BCT) with an investment of $75,000 to create a new culinary experience called "Dining Under the Stars" at their transit café. This experience is attracting visitors to the region and income generated from this social enterprise is helping the BCT run its transit fleet.
These investments have been crucial in helping local businesses and organizations welcome more visitors and build stronger, more vibrant communities.
