Statistics Canada is a world-renowned institution that provides data and evidence to support good governance, helping Canadians understand their country's population, resources, economy, society and culture. Statistics Canada ensures the information delivered through disaggregated data is both timely and relevant to Canadians.
Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced the appointment of André Loranger as Chief Statistician of Canada for a five-year mandate. He has been serving as interim Chief Statistician since March 2024.
Mr. Loranger, an experienced senior public servant, has worked at Statistics Canada for 27 years, leading large and complex statistical programs covering all aspects of the Canadian economy. He has previously served in various senior leadership positions in the agency, including Assistant Chief Statistician for Economic Statistics and Assistant Chief Statistician for Strategic Data Management, Methods and Analysis. He was also Statistics Canada's Chief Data Officer responsible for the overall stewardship of the organization's information data holdings. In this capacity, he ensured that the agency's vision, agenda and role with respect to data governance and data stewardship remained modern, evergreen and relevant.
Mr. Loranger was responsible for many of Statistics Canada's key economic indicators, such as the Consumer Price Index and the gross domestic product. He demonstrates a strong commitment to the institution and recognizes the importance of statistics and data, both on the national scene as well as internationally, as the Chair of the United Nations Network of Economic Statisticians and the Chair of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Environmental-Economic Accounting.
