Canine Carer: Hunny Graduates Therapy Dog Training

Local five-month-old Border Collie cross Kelpie pup, Hunny, has graduated from Ararat training facility Annie's Dogs, bringing another four paws into the community's therapy dog force.

While Hunny's breed marks her as a loyal, loving, intelligent and gentle dog, her new training has equipped her with skills that will benefit some of the most vulnerable members of our community. In-depth obedience training, temperament testing and therapy instruction qualify Hunny to bring joy to hospitals, schools, nursing homes and other public settings.

Hunny's owner Nerissa Gee also attended the four-day course, certifying the Ararat local as a Therapy Dog Handler under the expert eye of Dog Trainer and Behaviourist, Annie Silva. During Hunny's work hours, Nerissa kits Hunny out in a bright yellow therapy dog bandana as well as a halter and lead, all of which help Hunny recognise she's on call and signify her professional status to others.

Nerissa plans to introduce Hunny into Ararat Rural City's Supported Playgroup program, a service delivered through Council's Maternal and Child Health facility which provides opportunities for families to strengthen parenting skills to enhance their children's learning and development.

"Look out for this little champ, and when she's in Therapy Dog Mode, please say 'Hi' and give her a good ol' belly rub," says Nerissa.

Therapy dogs play a vital role in enhancing the wellbeing of individuals within a community. They can offer comfort to children experiencing anxiety or loneliness, assist with rehabilitation programs for those recovering from trauma or illness, and provide a calming presence for seniors experiencing isolation or cognitive decline.

"We are delighted to welcome Hunny to the community," says Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Jo Armstrong. "Hunny joins a vocation which provides invaluable support to our vulnerable residents, while showing all of us how to practice unconditional love. She will undoubtedly bring comfort and companionship to many who need it, and make a profoundly positive impact on our community."
