An initiative of the Queensland Government's Office of Fair Trading, the Buy Smart program is designed to help young Queenslanders develop vital consumer and financial literacy skills.

Carinity Education Southside was awarded a framed certificate and $1,500 for its sustained commitment to teaching consumer literacy to its students.

"The award was won for the engagement our school took in educating our students in consumer scams, financial literacy and consumer rights," teacher Bill Reinhold said.

The 17 winning schools and 45 winning students were acknowledged at a Buy Smart awards ceremony held at Queensland Parliament House.

Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity, Deb Frecklington, handed out the prizes to the winning students.

Year 11 students, Catarina Mansfield and Ella Bonnick-Colburn, accepted the award on behalf of Carinity Education Southside. The school has participated in the Buy Smart program since 2021.

"We have been engaging with the staff of the Office of Fair Trading to come to school assemblies and some senior classes to present information to the students about being savvy consumers and not being scammed," Bill said.

"In addition, we have had presentations about consumer rights and buying a first car."
