Carsurin, NBRI, Queen Mary Unite to Boost Indonesia's EV Sector

Queen Mary University of London

Since NBRI's establishment in 2020 with significant financial support and leadership from Queen Mary, Carsurin has partnered with NBRI to create a state-of-the-art EV battery testing facility in Indonesia. This is a cornerstone in the nation's drive towards sustainable mobility and technological leadership in the EV sector.

Combining Carsurin's commercial expertise with NBRI's cutting-edge research, this alliance will revolutionise the EV landscape. The EV battery testing facility will provide comprehensive laboratory testing services for EV battery cells, modules, and packs, in line with global standard UN 136. Initially focusing on two and three-wheel vehicles, the facility will expand to four-wheel vehicles.

"The establishment of a battery testing facility was one of the key deliverables when I co-founded the NBRI with Professor Evvy Kartini in 2020," says Professor Alan Drew of Queen Mary University of London. He goes on: "Both Professor Kartini and I have worked tirelessly, with the young talented team over the last few years bringing the NBRI to be the go-to authority on battery technologies regionally, and not just in Indonesia. We have been very fortunate to have continued support from Queen Mary since its establishment and are delighted Carsurin have recently invested in the battery testing laboratory. This alliance will enable safety and performance testing of imported batteries as well as Indonesian-made batteries, so they can be exported, making a huge impact on the local economy. In my opinion, this testing laboratory is the best within the ASEAN countries and highly competitive with the best global labs."

Sheila Tiwan, President Director of PT Carsurin Tbk, says: "The establishment of this EV battery testing facility marks a momentous step in our journey towards a greener, more sustainable future for Indonesia. Through our strategic alliance with NBRI, we are not just creating infrastructure; we are building the foundation for Indonesia to become a leader in the global EV landscape. This lab facility represents our dedication to excellence, innovation, and a commitment to the environmental well-being of our planet."

Dr Evvy Kartini, Founder of NBRI, comments: "This partnership with Carsurin is a testament to our shared vision for a sustainable and technologically advanced Indonesia. By pooling our resources and expertise, we are setting new standards for EV battery testing, research, and innovation. This facility is not just a lab; it's a beacon of progress, symbolizing our country's potential to drive global change in the EV industry. Together, we are steering towards a future where renewable energy and technology create a cleaner, more sustainable world for generations to come."

Carsurin will invest in lab testing equipment and manage operations, while NBRI provides the facility. Both will collaborate on marketing and promotion.

This strategic alliance signifies a leap towards Indonesia's vision of becoming a global hub for EV battery production and represents a model of collaboration between the private sector and research institutions.
