President Alar Karis of Estonia has called off his planned official visit to Australia due to insufficient funds, local media reported Thursday. The visit, scheduled for the summer, is now postponed indefinitely.
The decision was taken after a thorough evaluation of the available financial means, Epp-Mare Kukemelk, the president's office spokesperson, told Estonian tabloid, Õhtuleht (Evening Paper).
In a candid interview with the Estonian weekly, Maaleht, President Karis acknowledged the government's funding shortfall.
He expressed concern that the situation would hamper his capacity to fulfill certain critical duties wit potential implications for Estonia's foreign relations.
