Melton City Council is working with Westside Community Desexing to offer affordable cat desexing options for residents.
The discounted desexing program is only available to City of Melton residents who have cats in good health.
City of Melton Mayor Cr Goran Kesic said the program supported animal welfare by encouraging responsible pet ownership and helping to reduce the incidence of unwanted cats or kittens becoming abandoned.
"Council contributes $50 towards each cat desexed by a resident of the City of Melton," Cr Kesic said.
"All that is required is proof of residency to be eligible for the discount.
"The program aims to eliminate unnecessary euthanasia by reducing the number of stray cats or kittens entering shelters and pounds.
"It also helps protect our wildlife by reducing the numbers of feral cats."
