Homicide Squad detectives have released CCTV and dashcam vision in a public appeal for information, as investigations continue into the shooting murder of a man in Sydney's south earlier this year.
About 11pm on Saturday 30 January 2021, officers attached to St George Police Area Command responded to reports of gunshots fired in the vicinity of a carpark on Macmahon Street, Hurstville.
Police located a white C63 AMG Mercedes parked nearby with two men – aged 29 and 23 – suffering gunshot wounds inside.
The injured men were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital, where the older man died.
He has since been identified as Mustapha Naaman.
Initial inquiries were conducted by local police, before detectives from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad took carriage of the investigation under Strike Force Datos.
Following extensive investigations, Homicide Squad detectives are exploring whether the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.
As inquiries continue, strike force detectives have released CCTV vision of a grey 2018 Porsche Macan, with Queensland registration, seen travelling in the vicinity of Macmahon Street prior to – and immediately after – the shooting.
Strike force detectives have also released dashcam vision from the carpark where the shooting took place and are appealing for anyone in the community with information about the vehicle, or the incident, to come forward.
Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, described the shooting as a senseless and cowardly act.
"Our inquiries suggest Mr Naaman was an innocent man who was murdered for no reason after attending a boxing event with friends," Det Supt Doherty said.
"Detectives have established that a prominent member of an alleged organised crime network was also in attendance at the same event as Mr Naaman, however, had left the venue earlier in the evening.
"We believe this is a case of mistaken identity – Mr Naaman had no connection to any feuds between criminal organisations.
"During our initial inquiries, Homicide Squad detectives conducted an extensive canvass of the area and reviewed countless hours' worth of CCTV vision.
"These inquiries suggest three people were inside the Porsche depicted in the CCTV, which was first detected in Auburn travelling toward Hurstville. The Porsche then travelled back in that same direction after the shooting.
"As investigations continue, we are appealing for anyone who attended the boxing event at the Hurstville Entertainment Centre that night – and who may have seen or heard something suspicious – to please come forward and contact police.
"In addition, we would like to speak with anyone who has information relating to the Porsche depicted in the CCTV, which was stolen from a home in Yowie Bay in November last year," Det Supt Doherty said.
"Someone must know where this vehicle was stored from the time it was stolen to when it was used in the shooting."
Vehicle parts belonging to the Porsche were located by police in May at properties in Greendale and Liverpool after being dismantled.
Investigations under Strike Force Datos are continuing.
