As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, the City of Hobart proudly acknowledges the incredible contributions of our volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to enhancing the vibrancy and wellbeing of our community.

This year, the combined efforts of volunteers across various City of Hobart programs have amassed an impressive total of over 20,000 volunteer hours.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds has thanked those who give up their time to help the City and its community.

"Our volunteers are the heartbeat of Hobart," Cr Reynolds said.

"Their selfless dedication and tireless efforts help make our city a better place for everyone.

"From youth initiatives to programs supporting our older community members, there's a volunteer opportunity for anyone who wishes to make a difference."

The City of Hobart runs numerous volunteer programs, each contributing significantly to the community:

  • Bushland Volunteer Program: Over 700 volunteers contribute more than 3,000 hours annually, working tirelessly to maintain and enhance Hobart's beautiful natural landscapes.
  • Clean Up Australia Day: With 60 volunteers giving 180 hours of their time, this event significantly impacts our environment by keeping our streets and parks clean.

  • Mathers House: This program sees a remarkable 10,000 hours of volunteer service, providing vital support and social activities for our older community members.
  • International Student Ambassadors: Contributing 800 hours, these volunteers play a crucial role in helping international students acclimate and thrive in Hobart.
  • Still Gardening: With 2,400 hours volunteered, this program works with older community members to maintain their gardens, promoting physical activity and social interaction.
  • Salamanca Market: Volunteers contribute 1,200 hours, ensuring the smooth operation of one of Hobart's most iconic attractions.

  • Hobart Airport: With 1,173 hours of volunteer service, these individuals help travellers navigate the airport and provide a warm welcome to our city.

Welcoming and Inclusive City Portfolio Chair Cr Dr Zelinda Sherlock said volunteering was a fantastic way to connect with others and contribute to the community.

"Whether you are passionate about the environment, enjoy working with youth or senior community members, or want to help make our city more welcoming for visitors, there's a program that's perfect for you," Cr Dr Sherlock said.

The City of Hobart encourages all residents to consider volunteering and experience the rewards of giving back to the community.
