Collaborative efforts of government and industry are raising biosecurity awareness in the community during the inaugural National Biosecurity Week.
The week, which runs from 26-30 August, promotes biosecurity practices that safeguard Australia and encourages shared responsibility and proactive biosecurity management.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, said in Tasmania, biosecurity plays an important role in protecting our environment, agricultural industries, food supply, communities and overall economy.
"Tasmania has some of the world's most stringent biosecurity regulations," Minister Howlett said.
"Strict biosecurity requirements are in place to protect the state's environment and primary industries from introduced pests and diseases - from both overseas and the Australian mainland.
"Biosecurity is a shared responsibility and benefits all Tasmanians. Everyone has a role to play in protecting the state from pests, weeds and diseases. It's our general biosecurity duty."
Minister Howlett said the Tasmanian Government, in our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, is continuing its strong support for Tasmanian farmers, who know the value of keeping our island state free of pests and diseases.
"Australian farmers contribute $150 million in levies to pay the Federal Government for research and development, biosecurity screening and global market access," Minister Howlett said.
Tasmanians are encouraged to always report anything unusual, the early detection of weeds and animal and plant pests or diseases, supporting a more effective and efficient responses to the biosecurity threat.
To submit a report, call the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
National Biosecurity Week also provides a timely reminder that nominations can still be submitted to recognise the state's biosecurity champions.
The Tasmanian Biosecurity Awards acknowledge individuals, groups and organisations for their significant contributions to the state's biosecurity. Nominations close 31 August 2024.
