The Cessnock School of Arts building has been a prominent landmark in the community since its opening in 1924. This year, the building is celebrating its centenary and to honour its rich history, a unique exhibition has been organised to showcase its many stories.
The Cessnock School of Arts Centenary exhibition, which is part of the Australian Heritage Festival, will run until 13 May in the Cessnock Library foyer.
The Cessnock School of Arts building has seen many transformations over the past 100 years. From a hairdresser to a cemetery office to a Turkish baths, the building has been home to various organisations over the years.
Curated by Local Studies Librarian, Kimberly OʼSullivan, the exhibition will uncover these stories and shed light on the organisations that have called this heritage building home.
Library Services Co-ordinator Rose-marie Walters is encouraging the community to come along and experience the history of the important local landmark.
"The School of Arts has played a significant role in Cessnock and this exhibition is a way to pay tribute to its legacy," said Ms Walters.
"The exhibition provides a unique opportunity to gain insight into the past and celebrate the centenary of a building that holds great importance in our local community."
Visitors can also join Local Studies Librarian, Kimberly OʼSullivan for a special exhibition chat and walkthrough on Wednesday, 1 May from 5:30-6:00pm in the Cessnock Library foyer. Bookings for this event are essential and can be made from the Talking History section of the Library's 'What's On' page
