Cessnock's Hidden Herstories Revealed for Women's Day

In celebration of International Women's Day, Cessnock City Library is hosting a special event from 10am–12pm on Thursday 6 March, to honour the remarkable, often unsung, women who have shaped the region's history.

Attendees will have the opportunity to discover the powerful narratives of local heroines, highlighting their accomplishments in the face of adversity and their lasting impact on the community.

Among others, the event will feature the captivating story of Alice Betteridge, an Australian icon revered for her remarkable achievements against all odds.

Despite being deaf and blind from an early age, Alice defied her challenges and went on to lead an inspiring life as a student, teacher, and activist. Her story is a testament to the resilience and potential within every individual.

Event organiser and Local Studies Librarian Kimberly O'Sullivan says this event is an opportunity to dive into the inspiring women of Cessnock's past.

"We are surrounded by incredible women doing extraordinary things, yet their stories often remain untold," says Ms O'Sullivan.

"This event is designed to bring these 'hidden herstories' to light, celebrating the contributions of women who have quietly impacted Cessnock's past and continue to shape its future."

In the spirit of supporting women in need, a gold coin donation will be collected at the event to benefit Jodie's Place, a local organisation dedicated to providing vital support and resources to vulnerable women in the Cessnock area.
