The CFMEU ACT has applauded the ACT Government's introduction of developer licensing, which marks a significant step towards safeguarding the community from unethical and shoddy developers.
The CFMEU ACT has vocally advocated about the urgent need for developer licensing, citing widespread community support and the damaging impact of unethical developers.
"For too long dodgy developers have been allowed to enter and operate in the ACT market with impunity and it's only after they create chaos that the regulator can step in. The developer licensing scheme passed this week is a vital step to ending that era," CFMEU ACT Secretary Zach Smith said.
"The Redbridge survey our union commissioned found that 77 percent of Canberrans support licensing for property developers. So today's vote represents a huge win for the majority of people in the ACT.
"Too many Canberran lives - both workers and residents - have been damaged by the unconscionable conduct of developers. I congratulate the Barr Government for moving to address this, despite the noisy lobbying of vested interests in the contraction industry.
"Construction Minister Rebecca Vassarotti and Chief Minister Andrew Barr must be congratulated for standing up to groups like the Property Council, which launched a failed and baseless scare campaign against these sensible reforms.
"We know that dodgy property developers are nothing if not creative, and they will always scheme to get around any laws. So although the government has made a massive and important stride here, the imperative is to remain vigilant and I can guarantee you that is what the CFMEU will be doing."
