A man will face court today charged with property, traffic and assault-related offences in state's north.
About 5.30am on Monday 24 April 2023, emergency services were called to Warialda Street, Moree, following reports of a stolen car.
On arrival, officers attached to New England Police District were told three women – aged 58, 28 and 27 – were approached by two males, allegedly armed with baseball bats.
The males allegedly demanded the women's car keys before hitting one of their cars with the baseball bats.
The older woman and her 27-year-old passenger were able to leave the scene in their car.
After allegedly taking the other woman's keys, the males left in her car. It was found on fire about 20 minutes later on Mehi Crescent.
All three women attended Moree Police Station where the older woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to hospital suffering chest pain.
Following inquiries, officers stopped a vehicle on the Newell Highway, about 10km north of Narrabri, about 7.10pm yesterday (Thursday 24 August 2023), for the purpose of a random breath test.
After speaking with the driver, police searched the vehicle arresting a 18-year-old man.
He was taken to Narrabri Police Station and charged with
- Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner (three counts)
- Assault with intent to rob armed with offensive weapon
- Demand property in company with menaces with intent to steal
- Destroy or damage property
- Common assault
- Never licensed person drive vehicle on road (two counts) and,
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous.
The Moree man was refused bail to appear at a children's court today (Friday 25 August 2023).
