A builder and its director face potential fines of nearly $1million after EPA Victoria laid charges alleging the depositing of shredded plastic waste at the apartment block site in Manningham Rd, Doncaster.
EPA will allege in Heidelberg Magistrates Court that building company Century Apartments Pty Ltd and its Director Marco Antonacci, that during the construction of the apartment block, instead of properly disposing of the large quantity of shredded plastic waste appropriately, it was actually brought on to the site where it was buried.
EPA Officers conducted inspections and identified shredded plastic waste in backyards and garden beds as well as shredded plastic waste discharging from the property into neighbouring properties.
"Plastic waste, when not disposed of correctly and especially in such large quantities poses a risk to the environment," explained EPA North Metropolitan Regional Manager Jeremy Settle.
"Century Apartments should know their responsibility to dispose of waste materials like plastics appropriately. Burying shredded plastic waste on the site clearly does not meet their legislative requirement or community expectation.
