Charting Path To Real-time Bus Tracking

Eric Abetz, Minister for Transport

Live tracking of bus and ferry services will be introduced across the state in December, giving Tasmanian commuters access to real-time information about our public transport system that they need and deserve.

The technology allows customers to view the location of a bus or ferry on an online map, follow its progress along the route and see predicted arrival times.

Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, said the Tasmanian Government had committed to delivering online live tracking this year as part of its First 100 Days Plan.

"This is an important step in creating a more reliable, convenient and accessible public transport network for all Tasmanians," said Minister Abetz.

"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is about continuing to invest in essential services, building stronger communities and enhancing our regions.

"Having live information at your fingertips gives you the confidence to always be at your stop at the right time.

"It will provide peace of mind and help you to plan ahead when using public transport."

Buses and ferries will transmit GPS data, which is then published in real time to a range of free websites and mobile apps.

"Our aim is for anyone catching a general access service, anywhere in Tasmania, to be able to easily access this real-time information their trip," Minister Abetz said.

"You'll be able to easily see how far away your bus or ferry is so you can be at your stop as it approaches."

Live tracking will be rolled out across all Tasmanian general-access bus services operated by Metro Tasmania, Tassielink, Kinetic, Manions Coaches and Calows Coaches, plus the Derwent Ferries services between Hobart and Bellerive.
