Firefighters are asking people to check their flues and heaters following a house fire in Glenmaggie today.
CFA firefighters were called out to the two storey house fire at 8.21 am. Fortunately the two occupants had evacuated.
CFA brigades attending included Cowwarr, Glenmaggie, Heyfield, Sale, Maffra, Seaton and Traralgon.
Firefighters got the fire under control at 9.45 am but crews remained on scene to do mopping up until around 11.30 am.
The fire is a reminder for all Victorians to check and maintain their flues and chimneys.
To reduce the risk of fire starting from your fireplace or wood heater you should:
- Use a torch to check for creosote build-up or obstructions
- Have your chimney professionally cleaned annually
- Only burn dry, clean wood
- Extinguish your fire before going to bed or leaving the house.
People should also have gas heaters inspected and serviced every two years to protect loved ones from carbon monoxide poisoning or fire.
