Chinese Gardeners, Shopkeepers in N. Sydney: 1870-1932

North Sydney Council

North Sydney Council is proud to announce the launch of a new online exhibition, Chinese Market Gardeners and Storekeepers in North Sydney 1870-1932, during this year's History Week.

This permanent exhibition highlights the often-overlooked contributions of the Chinese community in North Sydney from the late 19th to early 20th centuries.

Curated by Dr. Ian Hoskins, the exhibition draws on Council archives, immigration records, and contemporary press to bring to life the personal stories of Chinese market gardeners and storekeepers.

The information provided within this site goes some way to writing the Chinese community back into North Sydney's history and, in the process, enriching the broader story of Sydney. Despite the challenges posed by the White Australia ethos, these individuals made their mark on the local area in ways that are only now being fully recognised.
