The finishing touches are being put on the free Christmas in Geelong Opening Night community celebration at Steampacket Quay this Saturday 12 November 2022.
In preparation for the major event, Western Beach and Eastern Beach roads will be closed to vehicles between Cunningham and Yarra streets from 5:15pm on Saturday. Moorabool Street will also close between Eastern Beach Road and Brougham Street.
Accessible parking will be available in the carpark at the entrance to Cunningham Pier with access via Western Beach Road and Cunningham Street.
Roving entertainment begins at 5:30pm at Steampacket Quay ahead of a two-hour stage show from 7:00pm, headlined by Taylor Henderson and Denis Walter and featuring Angie Hilton, Kate Daley, Steve Hobbs, Andy Pobjoy and Shandelle Cooke.
An accessible viewing area will be available on the southwest corner of Steampacket Quay, directly opposite The Carousel.
At 8:30pm Gheringhap Street will close between Little Malop and Malop streets.
One lucky child will flick the switch with Santa to turn on Geelong's iconic Floating Christmas Tree at 9:00pm and trigger a fireworks display. The tree's light and sound show will run until midnight.
The celebrations will continue, with a marching band leading community members to City Hall on Gheringhap Street for the Christmas projections and a small fireworks display from 9:45pm.
Moorabool Street, Western Beach Road and Eastern Beach Road will reopen from 10pm, and Gheringhap Street from 10:30pm, or when it's safe to do so.
Community members will be able to access the Novotel, Edgewater and Waterfront apartments via Yarra Street to Steampacket Place.
Emergency access will be maintained at all times during the event.

Saturday night promises to captivate locals and visitors of all ages.
The City of Greater Geelong is proud to host the family friendly Christmas in Geelong Opening Night celebration, which returns for the first time since 2018.
We ask that community members adjust to the changed traffic conditions and respect staff operating the road closures.
Due to the fireworks planned at Steampacket Quay and City Hall, we recommend community members bring their pets indoors or keep them in a secure location on the night, to keep them safe.
