City Moves to Rename Transfer Stations as Recycling Centers

The City of Greater Bendigo is undertaking a process to rename and register local transfer stations in Strathfieldsaye, Goornong and Heathcote with Geographical Names Victoria.

City of Greater Bendigo Resource Recovery and Education Manager Bridgette McDougall said the City is proposing to change the name of local transfer stations to recycling centres to make their purpose clearer to members of the community.

"This would mean that the facilities would be known as the Strathfieldsaye Recycling Centre, Goornong Recycling Centre and Heathcote Recycling Centre," said Ms McDougall.

"We believe the term transfer station no longer reflects the purpose of the facilities and the services they offer and provide to the community.

"The proposed name change to Recycling Centre will help encourage the community to identify reusables and recyclables at home and maximise resource recovery at the three local centres. It will also help reframe the Strathfieldsaye and Heathcote centres as places to find and buy items for re-use or re-purposing."

Public places need to be registered with Geographical Names Victoria and the City is a Naming Authority for places that it owns or manages.

The naming of public places must follow the statutory requirements of the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria.

Registering place names is essential to identify locations for managing emergencies and delivering goods and services in Victoria.

Members of the community are invited to provide submissions of support, or objections to the proposed new names for the transfer stations.

Feedback can be provided via the City's Let's Talk Greater Bendigo website.

All submissions must comply with Naming rules for places in Victoria - Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities - 2022.

At a minimum submissions or objections (including petitions and pro-forma documents) should explain:

  • The person's or group's interest in the naming proposal - for example if their address is affected or whether they have a personal link with the place and/or name
  • Reasons for the name being appropriate/inappropriate, suitable/unsuitable or supported/unsupported, including how it does and does not comply with the Naming Rules (naming principles/process)

All submissions must be received by February 23, 2025.

If you have any accessibility issues accessing Let's Talk Greater Bendigo and making a submission, please email or call:
