A popular section of small businesses in Harris Park, known by many as 'Little India', will be promoted as a destination of choice for visitors near and far, with its unique food and cultural offerings.
"With more than 20 eateries and shops selling everything from colourful saris and glittering arm bangles, to Indian spices that will transport you straight to Mumbai, Harris Park is a little slice of India in Western Sydney," City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.
"Harris Park is already known by locals for its authentic Indian cuisine, vibrant cultural events and celebrations, and diverse range of businesses. We are keen to share this local treasure and encourage visitors to experience what this colourful precinct has to offer."
Marion Street, Wigram Street, and Station Street East in Harris Park will be branded 'Little India' as part of an initial six-month campaign.
The initiative follows the establishment of the Little India Harris Park Reference Group, a committee of business, community and Council representatives, set up in 2020 to explore ways to promote the suburb across Greater Sydney to deliver economic and cultural benefits to the area.
Council also sought feedback from local businesses and residents, with more than 80 per cent supporting the use of 'Little India' to promote parts of Harris Park.
"The City of Parramatta is home to the largest population of people of Indian descent in Australia, with nearly half of those living in Harris Park born in India," Cr Dwyer said.
"We are proud to support and celebrate the Indian community's contributions to our wonderful City through this initiative, which will provide a boost to businesses and the local economy."
The campaign will build on several recent Council-led initiatives aimed at supporting the local economy, including the successful 'Go Local' campaign and AT Parramatta Gift Card program.
