The City of Swan will reduce its Councillors from 15 to 14 and adjust a number of ward boundaries as part of WA-wide Local Government reforms.
The City recently sought feedback from the community on a fair and equitable Council make-up and structure as part of a review of its wards and Council representation.
Informed by this community feedback, Council decided on the following changes:
- reduce the number of Whiteman Ward councillors from three to two
- transfer Brabham from the Whiteman Ward to the Altone Ward
- transfer the part of Caversham currently in the Altone Ward to the Swan Valley/Gidgegannup Ward
- transfer the part of Middle Swan not located in the Swan Valley Planning Act from Swan Valley/Gidgegannup Ward to the Midland/Guildford Ward
- transfer the part of Henley Brook currently in the Whiteman Ward to the Pearce Ward
- transfer Orchid Park in Bennett Springs from the Altone Ward to the Whiteman Ward
- transfer part of Lexia from the Pearce Ward to the Whiteman Ward
As part of the review, the City of Swan Mayor will also be elected by public vote at the next Local Government election in October.
City of Swan CEO Stephen Cain thanked the community for their valuable input which helped shape the review and guide the Council's decision.
"These reforms not only impact the Council but our community, so it was important for them to have their say in how we move forward," he said.
The City will advise the Local Government Advisory Board of its proposal, which will review it and make a recommendation to the Local Government Minister, who can then accept or reject it.
