Claremont College will become the home for the brand new, $28 million, purpose built Glenorchy Sports Centre.
Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan, said this investment in critical sporting and community infrastructure will deliver a four-court indoor facility.
"It is designed to accommodate a variety of sports including basketball, netball, volleyball, and futsal; changerooms and amenities for players, visitors, staff, and volunteers; a multi-purpose space; and carparking," Minister Duigan said.
"Increasing community engagement in recreation and sport is a driving force behind this development.
"Sporting facilities, such as this one, play a vital role in promoting a healthier, more connected community. They promote physical activity, which is crucial for maintaining good health, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and improving mental well-being."
A comprehensive assessment process informed the selection of this flat, fit-for-purpose location.
"We have worked closely with the Glenorchy City Council to deliver a location that meets the community's needs and long-term development goals," Minister Duigan said.
"The Glenorchy Sports Centre will not only serve Claremont College and the local community, it will also enhance the quality sports facilities across the northern suburbs."
Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, the Government will continue to back in local sports by investing in the facilities communities need.
It is important the Government identifies partnership opportunities to expand the benefit that Government schools provide to their communities.
"This development means the broader community as well as Claremont College students and staff will have access to high quality multi-purpose indoor sporting facilities," Minister Duigan said.
"I look forward to seeing the Glenorchy Sports Centre take shape."
Claremont College's Principal and School Association have provided their in principle support to co-locate the new Glenorchy Sports Centre on an under-utilised area of the Claremont College site.
Construction is expected to get underway in 2025, and be completed by 2026.
